Frequently Asked Questions
Your safety is our top priority. The tour is operated by licensed local airlines with experienced pilots who fly to Kaieteur regularly. The aircraft are small (usually 12-seater Cessnas or Twin Otters), maintained to international standards. All passengers are given a safety briefing, and life vests are on board. At the falls, you’ll be guided by professional park rangers on marked trails. While there are no guardrails at Kaieteur’s viewpoints (the area is kept natural), your guide will ensure everyone maintains a safe distance from cliff edges and follows all instructions . Hundreds of visitors safely enjoy this tour each year. As long as you listen to your guide and exercise common sense (no risky selfies near the edge!), the experience is very safe and well-managed.
Due to the remote nature of Kaieteur, tours are weather-dependent. Heavy rain, low clouds, or storms can occasionally cause flights to be delayed or canceled for safety. If this happens, the tour operator will attempt to reschedule you to the next available date. In the rare case rescheduling isn’t possible (for instance, if you are leaving Guyana or if the tour cannot be run), you will receive a full refund . Similarly, a minimum number of passengers 12 is required for the flight to run economically. When you book, the tour company will confirm if they have reached the minimum. If the minimum isn’t met, they may offer to move you to another date or combine you with another group. Rest assured: you won’t be charged if the tour doesn’t operate due to weather or group size – flexibility or refund policies have you covered. We recommend scheduling your Kaieteur trip early during your Guyana stay, so if it moves by a day or two due to weather, you won’t miss out.
Dress for a tropical outdoor adventure. We recommend wearing light, comfortable clothing – think T-shirt or long-sleeve shirt (moisture-wicking fabric is ideal) and long pants or shorts. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip are a must, as trails can be damp or muddy . A hat and sunglasses will help with the sun, and a lightweight rain jacket/poncho is wise (rainforest weather can bring sudden showers even on a sunny day). Don’t forget insect repellent – while Kaieteur’s high elevation has fewer mosquitoes than coastal areas, there are still insects in the jungle. Sunscreen is important for the sun exposure. Bring a refillable water bottle (we provide water to refill) to stay hydrated. A small daypack is useful to carry your items. And of course, bring your camera or smartphone to capture the stunning views (with waterproof protection or ziplock bags in case of mist). If you have binoculars for birdwatching, bring them along. We also advise packing any personal medication you might need (e.g., allergy meds) as there are no pharmacies in the jungle. In summary: dress comfortably, prepare for both sun and rain, and wear sturdy shoes – you’ll be all set!
This tour is moderate in activity level. There is no strenuous hiking or climbing involved, but you will be walking for about 1.5 to 2 miles total on uneven jungle trails. The walks are taken at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops, and most healthy individuals with average fitness can complete them without issue. The terrain includes dirt paths, some rocky sections, and a few gentle slopes. If you can handle a nature walk with some roots and steps, you should be fine. That said, it is not wheelchair accessible and not recommended for those with serious mobility limitations . There are no paved paths – remember, Kaieteur is in a wild setting. We’ve guided participants in their 70s who did great; just be prepared for warm humid conditions and take your time. The guide will accommodate the group’s pace. If you have knee issues or similar, a walking stick can help (bring a collapsible one if needed). We do not advise this tour for very young children (under ~5 or 6 years old) due to the walking and need for caution at viewpoints. Older kids and teens tend to enjoy it. As always, inform us of any medical conditions beforehand. Overall, if you’re comfortable with a nature walk and can handle a short flight, you’ll find this tour very doable and immensely rewarding.
Kaieteur Falls is spectacular year-round, but there are some seasonal differences. Guyana has two wet seasons (roughly May–July and Nov–Jan) and two drier seasons (Feb–April and Aug–Oct). In the rainy season, the volume of water over Kaieteur is at its maximum – a truly thunderous flow – but heavy rains can sometimes obscure the falls with mist and potentially disrupt flights. In the dry season, there is slightly less water, which can make the falls split into multiple strands, but the weather is often clearer for viewing and photography. Many travelers find September and October ideal: falls still strong, and weather relatively reliable. Tours operate in all months as long as conditions are safe. In terms of days of week: scheduled group flights to Kaieteur commonly go on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) , weekday flights are more than doable depending on bookings. We recommend planning a buffer day or two in your itinerary in case your flight needs to roll to the next day due to weather. Morning flights tend to have calmer weather. Ultimately, there’s no bad time to see Kaieteur – just come with a spirit of adventure! If you have a specific date in mind, book early to secure your spot, especially in peak tourist months (around Easter and late summer).
Kaieteur is a national park in a very natural state. There are no railings or fences at the main viewpoints. This is actually part of what makes the experience so special – the environment is pristine and you’re getting an unobstructed view. However, it means we must be cautious. Your guide will always accompany the group to the designated viewing areas, which are on solid rock ledges set a safe distance back. You will be instructed on how far you can go. For example, at Johnson’s Lookout and Boy Scout View, there are flat areas where you can safely stand or sit for photos, but you should not go beyond the rocks marked by the guide. We ask everyone to listen to the ranger’s instructions and not wander off alone. Do not attempt to go right up to the cliff edge – aside from falls risk, the mist can make surfaces slippery. That said, as long as guidelines are followed, the viewpoints are perfectly safe to enjoy. Our guides carry first-aid kits for minor issues (like a slip or bug bite). Also note, swimming at Kaieteur is not allowed (and extremely dangerous) – the water flows directly over the cliff. We mention this because some people ask! For a safe water experience, opt for Orinduik Falls extension where you can swim. Lastly, the jungle has wildlife but encounters on the trail are rare; you might see insects, maybe a harmless snake or frog. Guides are trained for wilderness safety. In summary, respect the power of nature, stay with your group, and you will have a very safe visit.
It’s wise to be up to date on routine travel vaccinations when visiting Guyana (such as tetanus, hepatitis A/B, etc.). Kaieteur’s area itself is malaria-free (the high altitude and sheer volume of water make it unfriendly to mosquitoes), but if you plan to travel to other lowland parts of Guyana, consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis. Yellow fever vaccine is required if you’re coming from a country with Yellow Fever risk (and recommended regardless for travel in South America). For the day trip, insect repellent and wearing long sleeves/pants will usually suffice to prevent bug bites. No special gear is needed for Kaieteur beyond what we listed (clothing, shoes, etc.). It’s a remote area, so there are no shops to buy things last-minute – double check you have your medication (e.g., inhalers) and personal needs with you. Also, due to the small plane’s weight limits, pack light (no huge backpacks; a daypack is fine). We will provide a secure place to leave any larger luggage in Georgetown. If you have concerns about the flight (e.g., if prone to motion sickness, take non-drowsy dramamine before the flight). But most people handle the short flight well. Prepare to be offline – there is no cell signal or Wi-Fi at Kaieteur, which is actually a nice break from the world! We’ve got you covered on logistics; just bring your sense of adventure and enjoy the journey.
Absolutely! Solo travelers are welcome. In fact, many people visiting Guyana join Kaieteur trips on their own and end up making friends along the way. If you’re solo, we will group you with other travelers on the flight to meet the minimum number. The price for one person is the same as listed ($325). Solo adventurers should try to plan a little flexibility with dates, as we’ll need to find a flight that has other passengers (or you can charter the whole plane at a higher cost if you’re in a rush or on a specific date). Generally, we have departures most weekends that you can join. When booking, just indicate you’re a single traveler; we’ll handle the rest. It’s a social experience but also perfectly enjoyable solo – the guides ensure everyone feels included. Safety-wise, there’s no issue traveling alone on this tour. So yes, come solo and get ready to meet fellow nature enthusiasts on the trip!
Booking is easy. You can reserve your spot through our website or by contacting Nature Travel Guyana via phone or email (WhatsApp also available). We require a deposit (or full payment) to confirm your booking because we must secure the plane seat in advance. Payment can be made in USD or equivalent GYD (Guyanese dollars), and we accept credit cards or bank transfers. Once you book, we’ll send you a confirmation with all details, including where to meet the driver, what to bring (as covered above), and our local contact numbers. If you’re already in Guyana, you can also visit our East Coast Demerara office to pay cash. Cancellation policy: If you cancel more than 6 days before departure, you get a full refund. Last-minute cancellations may incur a fee (or forfeiture of deposit) unless it’s due to an emergency. We strive to be flexible, and of course if we cancel for weather or operational reasons, you get full refunds (or the choice to reschedule) . In short, just reach out to book – we’ll guide you through the simple process. Given the popularity of Kaieteur, especially in peak season, we recommend booking at least a couple of weeks ahead (earlier if possible) to ensure you get your desired date. Come join us and witness the magic of Kaieteur!
Absolutely! Please inform us of any food allergies or dietary preferences when booking.
